Inertia Theorems for Matrices: the Semi-definite Case

چکیده
1. The inertia of a square matrix A with complex elements is defined to be the integer triple In A = (ir(A), V(A), 8(4)), where ir(A) {v(A)} equals the number of eigenvalues in the open right {left} half plane, and 8(A) equals the number of eigenvalues on the imaginary axis. The best known classical inertia theorem is that of Sylvester : If P > 0 (positive definite) and H is Hermitian, then In PH=ln H. Less well known is Lyapunov's theorem [2 ] : There exists a P > 0 such that (R(AP) = i(AP+PA*)>0 if and only if lnA = (n, 0, 0). Both classical theorems are contained in a generalization (Taussky [4], Ostrowski-Schneider [3]) which we shall call the

Positive Operators and an Inertia Theorem
In recent years there has been interest in a theorem on positive definite matrices known as Lyapunov's theorem. Several authors have proved generalizations of this theorem, (WIELANDT [29J, TAUSSKY [24J, [25J, [26J , OSTROWSKISCHNEIDER [20J, GIVENS [10J, CARLSON-SCHNEIDER [3J, CARLSON [4J) . Lyapunov's theorem and its generalizations have become known as inertia theorems. In this note we shall u...
متن کاملProduct of three positive semi-definite matrices
In [2], the author showed that a square matrix with nonnegative determinant can always be written as the product of five or fewer positive semi-definite matrices. This is an extension to the result in [1] asserting that every matrix with positive determinant is the product of five or fewer positive definite matrices. Analogous to the analysis in [1], the author of [2] studied those matrices whi...

Let A ⊆ Mn(C) be a unital ∗-subalgebra of the algebra Mn(C) of all n × n complex matrices and let B be an hermitian matrix. Let Un(B) denote the unitary orbit of B in Mn(C) and let EA denote the trace preserving conditional expectation onto A. We give an spectral characterization of the set EA(Un(B)) = {EA(U B U) : U ∈ Mn(C), unitary matrix}. We obtain a similar result for the contractive orbit...
متن کاملSome Theorems on the Inertia of General Matrices
1.1. Much is known about the distribution of the roots of algebraic equations in half-planes. (Cf. the corresponding parts in the survey [l] by Marden.) In the case of matrix equations, however, there appears to be only one known general result concerning the location of the eigenvalues of a matrix in the left half-plane. This theorem is generally known as Lyapunov’s theorem: (L,) Let A be an n...
متن کاملA sin 2 theorem for graded indefinite Hermitian matrices
This paper gives double angle theorems that bound the change in an invariant subspace of an indefinite Hermitian matrix in the graded form H = D∗AD subject to a perturbation H → H̃ = D∗(A+ A)D. These theorems extend recent results on a definite Hermitian matrix in the graded form (Linear Algebra Appl. 311 (2000) 45) but the bounds here are more complicated in that they depend on not only relativ...
